Model Earthquake Shakedown

The San Andreas Fault underneath Parkfield, California experiences a 6.0 magnitude earthquake about every 22 years. Barbot et al. created a model for this section of the fault that can explain these seismic events and the calm periods between them. This type of modeling could provide new ways to assess the likelihood of earthquakes along fault lines in response to natural forces or human factors.
