Twenty years ago, Biosphere 2 was built to see if humans could manage ecosystems inside a sealed environment. (Not very well.) Now this $150-million greenhouse in the Arizona desert is hosting an ambitious new experiment--the Landscape Evolution Observatory--to probe how water, soil, and plants interact in changing climates. Science News reporter Erik Stokstad visited LEO to find out how it works and what it will do. This video briefly reviews the tumultuous history of Biosphere 2 and takes a look inside the construction of three artificial hillslopes that make up LEO.
